Tree tensor networks and entanglement spectra
A tree tensor network variational method is proposed to simulate quantum
many-body systems with global symmetries where the optimization is reduced to
individual charge configurations. A computational scheme is presented, how to
extract the entanglement spectra in a bipartite splitting of a loopless tensor
network across multiple links of the network, by constructing a matrix product
operator for the reduced density operator and simulating its eigenstates. The
entanglement spectra of 2 x L, 3 x L and 4 x L with either open or periodic
boundary conditions on the rungs are studied using the presented methods, where
it is found that the entanglement spectrum depends not only on the subsystem

Facet-Based Browsing in Video Retrieval: A Simulation-Based Evaluation
In this paper we introduce a novel interactive video retrieval approach which uses sub-needs of an information need for querying and organising the search process. The underlying assumption of this approach is that the search effectiveness will be enhanced when employed for interactive video retrieval. We explore the performance bounds of a faceted system by using the simulated user evaluation methodology on TRECVID data sets and also on the logs of a prior user experiment with the system. We discuss the simulated evaluation strategies employed in our evaluation and the effect on the use of both textual and visual features. The facets are simulated by the use of clustering the video shots using textual and visual features. The experimental results of our study demonstrate that the faceted browser can potentially improve the search effectiveness
Slowly modulated oscillations in nonlinear diffusion processes
It is shown here that certain systems of nonlinear (parabolic) reaction-diffusion equations have solutions which are approximated by oscillatory functions in the form R(ξ - cτ)P(t^*) where P(t^*) represents a sinusoidal oscillation on a fast time scale t* and R(ξ - cτ) represents a slowly-varying modulating amplitude on slow space (ξ) and slow time (τ) scales. Such solutions describe phenomena in chemical reactors, chemical and biological reactions, and in other media where a stable oscillation at each point (or site) undergoes a slow amplitude change due to diffusion

We consider a setup in which the channel from Alice to Bob is less noisy than the channel from Eve to Bob. We show that there exist encoding and decoding which accomplish error correction and authentication simultaneously; that is, Bob is able to correctly decode a message coming from Alice and reject a message coming from Eve with high probability. The system does not require any secret key shared between Alice and Bob, provides information theoretic security, and can safely be composed with other protocols in an arbitrary context
The role of geographic mobility in reducing education-job mismatches in the Netherlands.
In this paper we investigate the relationship between geographic mobility and education-job mismatch in the Netherlands. We focus on the role of geographic mobility in reducing the probability of graduates working (i) jobs below their education level; (ii) jobs outside their study field; (iii) part-time jobs; (iv) flexible jobs; or (v) jobs paid below the wage expected at the beginning of the career. For this purpose we use data on secondary and higher vocational education graduates in the period 1996–2001. We show that graduates who are mobile have higher probability of finding jobs at the acquired education level than those who are not. Moreover, mobile graduates have higher probability of finding full-time or permanent jobs. This suggests that mobility is sought to prevent not only having to take a job below the acquired education level, but also other education-job mismatches; graduates are spatially flexible particularly to ensure full-time jobs.Geographic labour mobility;job mismatch;occupational choice;
Development of Neural Electromagnetic Ontologies (NEMO): Ontology-based Tools for Representation and Integration of Event-related Brain Potentials
We describe a first-generation ontology for
representation and integration of event-related brain potentials (ERPs). The ontology is designed following OBO “best practices” and is augmented with tools to perform ontology-based labeling and annotation of ERP data, and a database that enables semantically based reasoning over these data. Because certain high-level concepts in the ERP domain are illdefined, we have developed methods to support coordinated updates to each of these three components. This approach consists of “top-down” (knowledge-driven) design and implementation, followed by “bottom-up” (data-driven) validation and refinement. Our goal is to build an ERP ontology that is logically valid, empirically sound, robust in application, and transparent to users. This ontology will be used to support sharing and meta-analysis of EEG and MEG data collected within our Neural Electromagnetic Ontologies (NEMO) project
Direct Measurement of Neutron-Star Recoil in the Oxygen-Rich Supernova Remnant Puppis A
A sequence of three Chandra X-ray Observatory High Resolution Camera images
taken over a span of five years reveals arc-second-scale displacement of RX
J0822-4300, the stellar remnant (presumably a neutron star) near the center of
the Puppis A supernova remnant. We measure its proper motion to be
0.165+/-0.025 arcsec/yr toward the west-southwest. At a distance of 2 kpc, this
corresponds to a transverse space velocity of ~1600 km/s. The space velocity is
consistent with the explosion center inferred from proper motions of the
oxygen-rich optical filaments, and confirms the idea that Puppis A resulted
from an asymmetric explosion accompanied by a kick that imparted roughly
3*10^49 ergs of kinetic energy (some 3 percent of the kinetic energy for a
typical supernova) to the stellar remnant. We discuss constraints on
core-collapse supernova models that have been proposed to explain neutron star
kick velocities
